Madam, - We are deeply disturbed at the intention of HSE West to remove the breast service for the people of Mayo from Mayo General Hospital.
This service has been developed under the leadership of Mr Kevin Barry, consultant breast surgeon, over the past seven years. It comprises a full multidisciplinary team of experts which includes specialist consultant radiologist input, a consultant pathologist, a consultant oncologist and clinical nurse specialists. This expert team maintains the highest multidisciplinary care which meets all international standards for a top-class breast care service. It has strong network links with the breast care unit in University College Hospital, Galway.
We, the general practitioners of Mayo, are dismayed at the intention of the HSE to withdraw this essential service. The alternative for these patients would be to be placed on a waiting list for a service in UCHG. Why should this happen when a full service is available to these patients locally?
We strongly object to these proposals. As practitioners, we have a readily available service to us at present and feel it is unacceptable for this service to be taken away from the people of Mayo. Yours, etc,
BRÍD O'MALLEY,
Secretary, Mayo Faculty, Irish College of General Practitioners,
Túar Mhic Éadaigh,
Co Mhuigheo.
