Madam, - I wish to applaud Una McCormack's excellent letter of October 6th on the fate of the milk bottle. While I agree with her sentiment I must take her to task over one issue: her comments about foil caps and pecking blue tits.
In my garden the numbers of blue tits - and indeed of most songbirds - have been depleted, thanks to marauding magpies. So when this bird with its large beak pierces through a tinfoil cap, one wonders where the beak has been previously. Perhaps in the belly of a dead rat.
By all means bring back the glass milk bottle; but this time, in the interest of hygiene, replace the foil caps with a "beak-proof" top. - Yours, etc.,
Dr DENIS EUSTACE,
