Sir, - In his column of March 5th, John Waters made grandiose claims regarding the outstanding contribution of an Irish rock band to British musical culture.
The nation that has given musical enrichment to the world from Tudor times (Byrd and Tallis) through Purcell, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Walton, Britten and Tippett, down to contemporary world figures such as Peter Maxwell Davies and Harrison Birtwistle, is hardly in need of cultural stimulus from a rock band. - Yours, etc.,
Liam Ryan, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.
