Sir, - I have waited in vain to see any commentator or correspondent protest at the suggestion that the expected tax surplus should be used to allow cuts in taxation. Social services such as medical care, education and wel fare are all suffering from underfunding; I have direct experience as a hospital doctor of the failure to provide adequate finance to the hospital service.
Has Ireland now produced a society that is so materialistic and selfish that it demands cuts in personal taxation rather than the provision of services for those most in need? - Yours, etc., Conor J. Carr,
