Madam, - Having been raised as a Christian I try very hard (most of the time!) to feel compassion and kindness towards all fellow men and women. However, I have to confess that it gave me a world of satisfaction to see your picture of a "reveller" tossed by the horns of a calf (The Irish Times, July 11th) during the running of the bulls in Pamplona.
I find it impossible to empathise with those who enjoy the torture of animals. It is bad enough that dumb creatures are raised and slaughtered in obscenely cruel ways to provide food, but there can be no excuse for the treatment of bulls in the bull-ring. Those who take part in this awful torture deserve no sympathy when they themselves become victims. - Yours, etc,
CARMEL COURTNEY, Sandyford Road, Dublin 16.
