Madam, – Was the sickening hypocrisy and disgusting irony of Government Ministers being chauffeur-driven to Farmleigh on Monday picked up by anyone else? We are meant to be impressed that they are working on a Bank Holiday Monday.
One by one, chauffeur-driven Ministers peered out of their Mercs to talk to gathering reporters in the rain about the cuts we’ll all have to endure.
Granted, the State’s finances require urgent action, but looking at me from my TV and telling me what I need to do from an air-conditioned, leather-seated, chauffeur-driven, top-of-the-range Mercedes?
First cut? Ministers’ cars! I’m sure they all have their own cars and I’m sure they can all drive and I’m sure they all know where Farmleigh is. It wouldn’t save us €4.5 billion, but it would show we’re all in this together. – Yours, etc,
Madam, – It was impressive to see Government Ministers spending the bank holiday working on the “figures”. However, it was not impressive to see the long line of Volvos, Audis and Mercedes (I didn’t see other makes) snaking into Farmleigh – each with one passenger only. Did no one think of a mini-bus, park-and-ride or car share – we’re not expecting everyone to hop up on the bike.
Theory and practice regarding value for money are not quite coinciding. – Yours, etc,
