Madam, - I feel an immense sense of anger listening to the continuing media-driven frenzy of attack on the health service and in particular cancer services. Having survived diagnosis, surgery and treatment 30 years ago, I was again diagnosed, 12 months ago, with a different form of cancer. To the immense credit of the doctors, nurses and day ward staff in Naas and Tallaght Hospitals, and to my family and friends who supported and prayed for me, I am again in remission and looking to the future.

My anger comes from criticisms of a service which has had many successes, mine included and I would ask are you not in danger of (a) helping to sacrifice the very service cancer patients need on the altar of political vested interest and (b) frightening people to the extent that they will delay attending to symptoms, thereby reducing their chances of a positive outcome? - Yours, etc,
