Sir, - As a Scot temporarily domiciled in the Dublin suburbs, I have become interested in the phenomenon of wailing car alarms. I cannot enjoy the peace and tranquillity of my back garden on fine summer days without being assailed by the banshee screeching of these abominable devices.
On every occasion I have reason to be in my garden, there is an incessant warbling, sometimes from more than one device simultaneously. These are not from my immediate neighbours, rather sometimes from half-way across the city.
This phenomenon does not occur in the UK. Could somebody tell me what is different about the Irish, Irish cars or Irish car alarms that leads to this woeful scenario? - Yours, etc.,
Alasdair MacFarlane, St Mochta's Avenue, Clonsilla, Dublin 15.
