Madam, - In 2000 half of Leinster Lawn, the area at the rear of Leinster House overlooking Merrion Square, became a car park and so the only unimpeded view of our national parliament was spoiled.
For years it has been almost impossible for coach tourists to see or photograph the building from the front entrance on Kildare Street due to security huts, but there remained, at least, the possibility of a clear view of the garden facade of Cassell's fine 18th-century classical house. Alas, that too is now gone. When parking in the formal garden was first permitted it was understood that it was to be a temporary measure and that the lawn was to be restored.
Tourist guides have more direct contact with visitors than any other group working in tourism and are aware, at first hand, of the reaction of tourists to what should be one of the highlights of a tour of any capital city - the view of its Parliament and surrounds. They are not impressed with the car littered area obstructing what was the most attractive and accessible view of the building.
May we ask those with power to do so to return the area to a formal garden in a style appropriate to the architectural context?
We will resist the temptation to ask the Government how it can on the one hand encourage citizens to think of their health, to think of the environment, to use public transport to get to work, while at the same time providing parking for themselves right at the door! - Yours, etc.,
