Carrying cost of childcare

Madam, - It is interesting that Aidan O'Carroll (September 12th) feels he shouldn't have to pay taxes towards the costs of childcare, because he chooses not to procreate. That's his choice.

However, as Mr O'Carroll is a smoker and an ardent critic of the smoking ban (Letters, February 27th, March 26th, April 8th, June 22nd and July 10th, 2004, and April 18th, 2005) I wonder if he feels that non-smokers should have to pay taxes toward the healthcare of people with smoking-related illnesses, even though they choose not to smoke. Surely having a cigarette is a poorer choice that having a child. - Yours, etc,
