Madam, - If the State is to keep in mind the principle of subsidiarity, as Archbishop Brady urges, it should do exactly the opposite of what he is suggesting (The Irish Times, September 9th).

The principle of subsidiarity holds that government should undertake only those initiatives which exceed the capacity of individuals or private groups acting independently.

Therefore, let the Catholic Church provide its own educational facilities for its ethos, and let the Government provide non-denominational schools, as befits a State which claims to be a republic. - Yours, etc,
