Madam, - To judge Mr Tannam's assertion (September 7th) that capitalism is responsible for global warming, one has only to look to China's recent record.
It is consumption, driven by the use of energy sources that produce CO2 and other warming pollutants, that has caused temperatures to rise. Political will is required to deliver engineering-led change, but politicisation of the problem's causes has so far simply entrenched positions and delayed action. Irrespective of political system, the challenge is to meet the legitimate demands of the world's poor for increased access to energy, while reducing warming emissions globally. The blame game does not help. - Yours, etc,
STEPHEN BARRETT, Abbeyleix.
