Sir, - Mr Justice Hugh O'Flaherty is to be congratulated on his splendid piece setting the record straight in regard to President Cearbhall O Dalaigh.
President O Dalaigh was shamefully and shockingly treated by the Cosgrave-Donegan-FitzGerald alliance from the moment they were forced to accept him as President. The Government's failure to apologise to him for the public insult given to him by the Minister for Defence may have been the highlight of these people's campaign against him, but it was by no means the only occasion on which they sought to demean and sideline the office of President.
Would now not be a suitable time for the full record of the 1973-77 Fine Gael-Labour Government to be examined by a panel of trustworthy historians? - Yours, etc.,
Blackrock, Co Dublin.
