Sir, - The local opposition to change in Beal na mBlath is understandable. That historic spot will be forever linked with the death of Michael Collins, and, as far as possible, the scene there should be preserved in its traditional state.
It must be conceded, of course, that Beal na mBlath today cannot be exactly the same as it was in 1922. The passing years would have brought some change. Trees and bushes, and other intrusions would have altered things. These could be cleared away if their removal would help to restore the locale to something like the original scene. But any fundamental change in the configuration of the local landscape would, however, be unacceptable.
There is another aspect of the Beal na mBlath site that should be mentioned. The memorial stone there is not impressive. Granted, it was a brave and sincere attempt to honour the memory of the fallen leader, soon after he died, but emotion and religious feelings seem to have prevailed over artistic considerations in its conception.
Sometime in the future, perhaps, it may be possible to replace the present monument with a more fitting memorial to Michael Collins, who sacrificed his life for the people of Ireland, in this lonely valley of Beal na mBlath, on August 22nd, 1922. - Yours, etc., Ernan Morris,
