Sir, - Like Cathy Sheridan (February 8th), I too have noticed a distinct lack of helpfulness in our capital city. The other day I had to go to the supermarket for some shopping. I found the milk without any difficulty and, with some degree of effort, located the eggs.
However, I ran into trouble trying to find the olive oil and wandered around forlornly for half-an-hour.During this time at least 60 women passed me by and, although it was obvious that I was in some distress, not one of them asked if I needed help. Indeed, the women in the vegetable section took pleasure in my plight - I could tell by the way they were weighing their carrots. After four hours I managed to get all nine items on my shopping list. I even figured out where to pay for them. But I was shocked and saddened by the lack of help I received. - Yours, etc.,Gareth Cassidy, Pembroke Road, Dublin 4.
