Sir, - Breda O'Brien's article (Opinion, December 1st) about the Christian Brothers introduces some balance to the coverage. No one can deny her assertion, "Terrible things were done. Redress must be made".

However, if it is appropriate to blame the Brothers as a group for the actions of some of their members, it is also appropriate to acknowledge the contribution and dedication of the vast majority of Brothers.

By its very nature any inquiry does not take into account those of us where experience of the Christian Brothers was, and continues to be, a positive influence. Breda O'Brien's image, of genuine and committed Brothers sitting in community houses watching their life's work being rejected, rings true.

The ideals and principles were, and still are, good. The fact that the practice deviated dreadfully in some instances means it will be difficult to keep this concept to the fore. This needs to be done if we are not to condemn the good with the bad. - Yours, etc.,
