Sir, – If the Government can introduce legislation to deduct money from salary or social welfare for non-payment of the household charge, perhaps it could expand the legislation to people who owe the State slightly more than the household charge – people such as former banking executives and property developers. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – I can’t see what all the fuss is about the property tax. Just tax those earning over €60,000 a year and take it out of their wages. For those individuals the Government can’t find up trees in suburbs around the cities, I can’t help you there, but I think my initial suggestion solves the problem. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – While purchasing a Wendy house for my son last Thursday for Christmas, it occurred to me that Michael Noonan has missed out on an opportunity to cash in on such childhood extravaganzas. The square footage of said house is approximately 2sq m. Fear not, as in the adult world it can still be levied at the same rate as a 5 or even 6sq m mini-mansion.
Using this logic, the levy would obviously be €100 per annum. My son is only starting to speak, so I can’t tell for sure, but I think he would like to play his part in getting Europe up and running again. If he displays a vigilante attitude in a few months’ time and voices his dissent, the levy can simply be deducted from his children’s allowance each month.

Sir, – We don’t like having to “register” for tax purposes, no doubt due to our history. So may I suggest a very simply system for a simple (if unpopular with some) tax? I suggest a house tax disc, like a car tax disc, but available in the local Post Office. Just put the disc on the front door of the house. Unlike cars, houses don’t move, so that should make it all so easy, and cost little to administer. – Yours, etc,
