A chara, - To celebrate St Brendan's Day on May 16th, the Brendan Society visited Clonfert Cathedral and were welcomed by the Rector, Mr Wayne Carney and members of the community concerned about the preservation of this outstanding monument, Mrs Peg Monahan and Mr Christy Cunniffe.
Despite their dedicated efforts, Clonfert Cathedral is badly in need of funds for maintenance. The Board of Works has commissioned a recent survey of the deteriorating stonework in the famous doorway. However, there appears to be no national agency responsible for the preservation of one of the most beautiful expressions of Ireland's architectural heritage. Clonfert has not been promoted as a feature of the cultural tourism scene in Ireland, although the fame of St Brendan the Navigator is worldwide.
Clonfert Cathedral is a sadly neglected jewel, strangely forgotten at a time when the Celtic Tiger is said to be thriving. In less prosperous times the Irish nation was capable of producing remarkable works of art. The Brendan Society wishes to express its support for any undertaking which will remedy the present condition of Clonfert Cathedral. - Yours, etc., Con Howard, Mary Caufield,
