Madam, - On behalf of our chairman, Joe Dowling, and the board of directors and staff of the Gaiety School of Acting I call on Trinity College Dublin to reconsider its short-sighted decision to close the three-year acting degree.
At times of unprecedented growth (when the story of a nation needs to be told and tracked by well-trained actors and artists), it is astonishing that Trinity should take this decision. Dublin City University must be commended for its visionary decision to validate (and soon accredit) a new three-year acting degree which will be delivered by the Gaiety School of Acting at new facilities attached to the Smock Alley Theatre in Temple Bar, which is soon to be reinstated.
The great shame is that the healthy competition between Trinity College and ourselves in the training of actors at this level will be no more. Provost Hegarty, raise the curtain. - Yours, etc,
PATRICK SUTTON,
Director,
Gaiety School of Acting,
Temple Bar,
Dublin 2.
