Sir, - We write in regard to remarks made on RTE's Kenny Live on November 28th about the professionalism of social workers, particularly those who are single, under 30 and childless. As with any professional qualification, there is a high standard which must be attained before it is granted. The social work qualification requires a minimum of four, more often five years at university. This qualification is granted based on skills and experiences obtained through academic studies and practical, supervised placements. It is not based on a person's private life.

It is unacceptable that any professional's personal circumstances and status be called into question to ascertain their competency as a social worker. If it is deemed acceptable to question these issues, should the same not apply to doctors, teachers, psychologists, and any other health care professionals, or indeed television or radio presenters who interview vulnerable people. - Yours, etc., Catherine Sherlock, MSocSc (Social Work), Trisha Callan, MSocSc (Social Work)
