Sir, - As one of those politically incorrect souls who, although having ceased to smoke, still commutes by car, may I pose two questions for your readers? These have occurred to me while pondering the terror of a one-lane Donnybrook.
Firstly, can anyone identify the four last places between Leeson Street Bridge and the Loughlinstown roundabout where traffic lights could possibly be placed? In answering this, one may ignore completely arbitrary placings, such as the set 50 yards east of the Wellington Place junction.
Secondly, what is the language of the phrase "lana bus"? It certainly makes no sense in English or in Irish. It may be that there is simply a misspelling and it could be reconstructed as "An bus lan", being an aspiration to a higher form of commuting. Alternatively, the writer may have meant to bring us "La na mBus", an apocalyptic reminder from a higher power that car owners will soon be consumed by an unstoppable Q.B.
On these points, as on so much else, I await the enlightenment of your summer readers. - Yours, etc.,
Nathaniel Healy, Newcastle House, Newcastle, Co. Wicklow.
