Sir, - Robert Looby's article (February 8th) relating to concert ritual and stuffy formality stood out as he compared the inaccurate reputation of classical concerts to the ludicrous public relations ritual now associated with rock concerts. He highlighted the fact that tickets are sold months in advance by encouraging long overnight queues or by advertising a free-phone credit card line, a method by which I have yet to procure tickets.
An Irishman's Diary was published on page 17. As if to illustrate Mr Looby's point The Irish Times had ironically placed on page 21 a large picture of the Canadian artist, Alanis Morissette. The advertisement was for her tour 1999, "tickets on sale this Friday 8 am!" (Friday, February 12th). Underneath it stated the concert date, "Sunday July 11th, '99" Point taken Mr Looby.) - Yours, etc.,
