Madam, - I would like to add my voice to those who have protested about the unsightly concrete barriers being erected along the scenic route between Caherdaniel and Waterville, Co Kerry.
This route over Coomakista pass is to my mind one of the most scenic stretches of coastal roadway, not just in Ireland, but anywhere in the world. The barriers, ugly in themselves, are also too high to allow a clear view of the surrounding coastline from a standard car.
I understand that they have been transported all the way from Drogheda to replace the beautiful, locally built, existing stone walls.
These walls needed repair, but in an area of chronic underemployment and where there are a number of skilled local stonemasons, surely it makes economic sense to preserve our heritage and encourage ancient skills. - Yours, etc,
MAURICE TAYLOR, Rath, Caherdaniel, Co Kerry.
