Madam, - I viewed the excellent Sea Scallion Viking Ship last week. There were numerous tourists and visitors in the area.
On returning by foot I noticed a plaque giving details of the Custom House, which was completed by Gandon in 1791.
When I reached the said building I noticed that the windows on the Liffey side need painting and appear to be damaged by the weather.
They are filthy and appear not to have been cleaned for some time.
There are beer-cans all over the place and signs that people are sleeping rough there at night.
At first I considered that the building was vacant but I noticed further up the quay the sign "Department of the Environment and Local Government".
Perhaps we should remove the plaque giving details of this building in its present condition or else invest in a pot of paint and a window cleaner.
Several other people looking at the building made the same point. - Yours, etc,
JOHN GLYNN, Orwell Walk, Dublin 14.
