Madam, - As recently reported by you, the Government, through the All-Party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution, is currently considering changes to parts of the Irish Constitution. The chairman, Mr Denis O'Donovan, TD (FF), has declared that the committee has "no agenda".

This may be true as far as Mr O'Donovan and members of the committee are personally concerned. It is possible that the task is being approached with objectivity, so that we all may benefit. But I cannot see how the statement can be true of the Government of which Mr O'Donovan is a member.

The Taoiseach has already signed the EU Constitution, and will shortly be asking us to say "Yes" to it also. What will it matter then about Articles 40, 41 and 42 of the Irish Constitution?

It is hard to escape the conclusion that this is an exercise with the objective of getting potentially awkward issues out of the way. - Yours, etc,
