Sir, - I will write "Catholic" on the upcoming census form, even though my cardinal and I have disagreed about a number of issues, not least that a woman cannot be ordained priest within that church. I am appalled, however, by the "sheer bitterness and impudence" of the sentiments expressed by David O'Hanlon (March 2nd).
He is apparently a priest in good standing in the diocese of Meath, given his address. Accordingly, I suggest it is time for Dr Michael Smith, Roman Catholic bishop of Meath, to instruct the said David O'Hanlon to make no further public statements concerning soup, sherry, ham sandwiches or anything else. I further suggest that Dr Smith make a public statement that whatever about the content of this man's theology, his manner of addressing his Christian sisters and brothers is totally and unequivocally unacceptable.
I would not wish Dr Smith's silence on this matter - or indeed that of the other Catholic priests in the Meath diocese - to be mistaken for acquiescence. Otherwise, we are all otherwise shamed and diminished. - Yours, etc.,
Gail Grossman Freyne, Charleville Road, Dublin 6.
