Madam, – The mind boggles at the lengths those like Christian Schaffalitzky (February 22nd) will go in distorting the words of others to make them fit their claims. Phil Jones, the climate scientist at the centre of the recent hacked e-mail controversy, made none of the statements in his recent BBC interview that Mr Schaffalitzky said.
What Phil Jones actually said was he was “100 per cent confident that the climate has warmed” and agrees with the evidence that shows that most of the warming since the 1950s is due to human activity. Contrary to what Mr Schaffalitzky claims, Phil Jones said the lack of evidence from the southern hemisphere makes it impossible to conclude that there was a Medieval warm period.
Do climate change deniers like Mr Schaffalitzky, who worked so tirelessly over the past months to disgrace Phil Jones, not see the irony in their present attempts to rehabilitate him to their own ends?
Either way, it should come as no surprise that, in doing so, they would seek to completely invert what he actually said. – Yours, etc,
