Sir, - Rudolph Lohse, (July 12th) says that anybody partaking of "the Eucharist" (presumably the Roman Catholic version) while believing that the bread and wine are merely symbolic, belittles the (Roman Catholic) faith. In my opinion, a Protestant partaking in such a Eucharist - regardless of his/her belief vis-a-vis transubstantiation - would belittle the Protestant faith which, of course, teaches that those commodities are merely symbolic. After all, this most important issue has been the main cause of division between the two churches since the Reformation - with very good reason. - Yours, etc.,
