Madam, - Is it really necessary to use sex to sell everything in this country?
The front page of your property supplement of May 19th carries an advertisement for yet another new housing "development", this time in Malahide, in which a model, wearing what looks like a black silk slip and pouting at the camera, lounges on a sofa against a marine background.
I am often reminded of a comment made by the singer Tony Bennett some years ago, when he said that the era of rock music will go down in history as a time when musical standards declined. It seems to me that the Celtic Tiger era will be remembered as a time when the Government gave priority to the economy over social cohesion and the Irish people were corrupted by affluence, like a man winning the lottery, spawning a host of social problems, disregard for our cultural and spiritual heritage, and a glorification of the consumer lifestyle. - Yours, etc,
JOE PATTON,
