Madam, – The letter from the Mayor of Greystones, George Jones (December 3rd) betrays the same contempt for the public who fund his excursions as his imposition of the Greystones marina which is opposed by a majority of the local population.
He claims his long-haul trip to China was “not just” to accept the award.
One can only marvel at the spectacular coincidence which resulted in important Greystones Council work occurring in Dongguan city, China, at the same time as the International Awards for Liveable Communities ceremony.
The taxpayer must applaud the cost effectiveness of our councillors in killing two unspecified birds at the same time in China.
Mr Jones fails to explain what other business Greystones councillors had in China and why the presence of three people was necessary to accept an award (when, for example, a press release might have sufficed).
Why exactly did Mr Jones and two colleagues fly to China and at whose expense?
Perhaps he believes he is entitled to it. – Yours, etc,
