Sir, - Congratulations on your excellent Editorial of November 2nd and on Patrick Smyth's article marking the establishment of the new permanent Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. However, although both pieces acknowledge the importance of the work carried out by the court and by the Commission of Human Rights, they omit to applaud the excellent contribution made by the distinguished former Irish members of these bodies, namely Judge Brian Walsh, who sadly died earlier this year, and Mrs Jane Liddy, who was until recently President of the First Chamber of the Commission.
Both Judge Walsh and Mrs Liddy were outstanding members of the bodies on which they sat for several years. The important and frequently dynamic role which they played in the formulation of European human rights jurisprudence should be formally acknowledged, with gratitude, at this time.-Yours, etc., Dr Ursula Kilkelly,
Department of Law, University of Wales, Swansea.
