Madam, - I trust that Independent Newspapers is apologising for publishing its report about Liam Lawlor last Sunday, not just for the fact that it was inaccurate.
How any editor could think that publishing such details the day after the man died is beyond me. Would it have been too much to leave it for a few days? Did the "Sindo" have so little to lead with? The hurt to the family was unforgivable.
Until this I had been lukewarm about the idea of a press council. Now my view is that it cannot happen soon enough. - Yours, etc,

Madam, - The disrespect shown by the Sunday Independent to the wife and family of Liam Lawlor has disgusted me and many others. The paper's appetite for crass sensationalism shirks the rudiments of objectivity and professionalism to which the reading public is entitled - even from lightweight fodder masquerading in broadsheet. - Yours, etc,
JOHN HILL,

Madam, - When is The Irish Times going to bring out a Sunday edition? Surely the inaccuracies in some, if not all of Sunday's papers relating to the details surrounding Liam Lawlor's death prove we need a quality paper on Sundays. - Yours, etc,
JOE HARVEY,
Glenageary Woods,
Co Dublin.
