Sir - While we focus on the continuing humanitarian damage of the Yugoslavian war another issue is emerging that may affect all of Europe. Maggie O'Kane, speaking on radio last weekend, mentioned the nature of bombs being surgically dropped on the Serbs. As in Iraq, the shells are said to contain spent uranium fuel.
Only the most cynical among us could suggest that this second war in the series is being used to dispose of stockpiles of the deadly nuclear by-product. Surely no country would willingly permit the dumping of this product intact in the heart of Europe, even in controlled conditions, never mind recklessly dispersed in bomb casings.
If this report is true, then we may be experiencing not only an illegal war, but illegal dumping of nuclear materials also. - Yours, etc.,
James F. Clerkin, Ballymacelligott, Tralee, Co Kerry.
