Sir, - What must it be like to be a "decent" Serb in the present circumstances?

Your front page (June 16th) says it all: a picture of defiant Serb soldiers brandishing their weapons and unrepentant for the atrocities they and their comrades have committed, above an article by Kathy Sheridan exposing the unforgivable barbarity of Serbian treatment of the inmates of the hospital at Shtimjle and their sordid theft of its vital drugs and even foodstuffs.

The shame of Serb inability to treat non-Serbs as fellow human beings with equal rights will haunt all Serbs for the years to come. Let us not seek to exact retribution from them, but, by being ready to welcome them back into parity of esteem as fellow Europeans, deserving of help, they may thereby come to be able to live in harmony with themselves and their neighbours. - Yours, etc.,
