Sir, - I refer to the report "Garda driver on `999' call killed" (The Irish Times, January 27th). This accident occurred at the junction of Greenfield (not Greenhills) road and The Rise, Mount Merrion. The intersection is in a residential area but large numbers of commuters use both roads daily as a through route. I have lived on one of the corners for the past three years, during which time there have been at least a dozen accidents. We have witnessed two and on a number of occasions had to call the emergency services and administer first aid. Our garden wall is the only one of the four corners which has not recently been demolished by a crashing vehicle. The local residents' association had discussions with Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for many years over a traffic calming scheme, but these have ground along at snail's pace. Perhaps this unfortunate death of a young garda driver will now spur the council officials into speedy action.Rather than elaborate plans for brick ramps, parking bays, cul-de-sacs and no-entry signs, a simple system of four Yield signs and a drive-over roundabout, as exists at the junction of Elgin Road and Raglan Road, would suffice. - Yours, etc.Desmond E.
