Madam, - How poignant that Brendan McWilliams wrote, in his last column, of October being the year in the "youth of its old age". Little did we know that the great man would be taken from us at that precise stage of his own life.

Madam, - Reading the beautiful tributes to the late Brendan McWilliams in your Letters page, I wondered: did he realise in life that he had such a fan club?
How many times, after reading yet another erudite piece by him, did I briefly think I must write and say well done? But I never did; always busy. I think we all need to take time to acknowledge those who enrich our lives before it is too late. Belated thanks to you, Brendan, for your wit, wisdom, and Weather Eye. - Yours, etc,
BILL RYAN, Aughanterroe, Ennis, Co Clare.
