Madam, - This evening I made a weather remark to my husband, adding, "Weather Eye would like that".
Brendan McWilliams was affectionately known in our house by his column name and I frequently prefaced or ended discussions with "Weather Eye was saying / wrote about that/excelled himself today".
The breadth of his knowledge was extraordinary.
His erudite mixture of science, folklore, art, literature, music and history made compulsory reading.
His quotations from some of my favourite authors particularly endeared him to me.
Thomas Hardy would say of him, "He was one who had an eye for such mysteries".
Dickens would say, "Nobody but himself can in any way come up to him".
The penultimate word may be left to Shakespeare - "Good night sweet Prince, and flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest".
The last word for now must be from his devastated readers - "Sleep soft, dear Weather Eye, you will never be forgotten".
- Yours etc,
CAMILLA FOX, Mallards House, Griffinstown, Kinnegad, Co Westmeath.
