A chara, - It was something of a surprise to read the vengeful and unforgiving outpourings that followed the death of Fr Brendan Smyth. In the countryside there used to be a counsel, to "speak no ill of the dead".
Brendan Smyth is dead. Was he not punished for his sins and crimes against children? Sentenced twice to terms of imprisonment in his old age, attacked and injured in prison, defrocked, vilified, his name a byword for paedophilia, surely his glass was full to the brim of vinegar. But some wanted to dance on his grave. Dancing on graves is a fairly useless activity as the recipient of the dance is deaf and dumb to everything. - Yours, etc.,
Pat Feeley,
Glenageary, Co Dublin.
