Sir, - If, as recent tragedies on our roads indicate, high speeds appear to be the main cause, then it is self evident that all drivers will have to make positive and permanent decisions to reduce their own top speeds, irrespective of the fear of being caught.
As a driver of a 12-year-old Golf GTI, which like most modern cars is capable of reaching the speed limit of 60 m.p.h. in a very short time, the decision to permanently cap my top speed to either 60 or 70 m.p.h., depending on the limit, is one that I do not relish. However, I have made that decision in recent weeks.
Obviously this personal pledge would have more impact if it came from a 20-year-old driver rather than a person with 40 years driving experience, but that said, I still put up a huge mileage each year.
The Government could show real leadership by publicly pledging that all official drivers would cap their top speeds to 60 or 70 m.p.h. and perhaps other major employers of drivers could do the same. - Yours, etc.,
Kilbaha, Co Clare
