Deaths on the road

Sir, - As recent tragedies suggest, the appalling carnage on our roads is set to continue for the foreseeable future

Sir, - As recent tragedies suggest, the appalling carnage on our roads is set to continue for the foreseeable future. For years the National Safety Council has highlighted the dangers of speed to good effect. But it is now time to highlight the real killer - slowness, inertia and inaction. The current Government's inability or unwillingness to implement their own "Road to Safety" strategy is directly responsible for the daily death toll on our roads.

Lack of a penalty points system, lack of management of driver education and unwillingness to implement zero alcohol tolerance will be the main contributing factors in the deaths of many individuals on our roads over the coming years. It's time for the Government and the Department of Environment and Local Government to SPEED UP. - Yours, etc.,

Aidan Stacey, Rathmines, Dublin 6.
