Sir, - No one who drives from Galway to Dublin or, I'm sure, makes any other long journey, can be surprised at the level of fatal accidents. Fast, reckless driving, lunatic overtaking, speeding on the wrong side of the road before suddenly lunging into a non-existent space between other cars - all this happens regularly on every long journey, every day.

And, not a Garda checkpoint anywhere in sight.

No one really believes that Garda checkpoints alone will solve the road safety crisis in Ireland, but they would surely reduce the levels of dangerous driving. - Yours, etc.,
