Sir, - Fr Vincent Twomey (The Irish Times, April 15th) states that Dr Connell, Archbishop of Dublin, wants an open and frank discussion on the issues which touch the heart of what we are as a nation. Fr Twomey goes on to say that public debate is the life-blood of democracy and the Church's primary role in the body politic today is to promote that debate.
It doesn't seem to have occurred to Fr Twomey that this longed-for honest debate hasn't even happened yet within his own bailiwick - the Catholic Church - not to mention the heart of the nation. - Yours, etc.,
