Madam, - Owen Corrigan asks (October 11th): "Does Mrs Stewart seriously mean to imply that a house without a woman chained to the sink is not a home?"
Surely this is a wholly outmoded notion of the privilege it is for a woman to be able to care for and rear a child?
Of all the blessings I have encountered in my life so far, and I acknowledge they were many, I count the gift of our daughter the greatest. What a pity that the fulfilment in raising children is now so downgraded that it is considered that women who care for their children themselves cannot reach their full potential.
Surely logic will dictate that it is very hard to define a "home" as one where parents leave at daybreak with their children, hand them over to carers, collect them on the way home and have time only to feed them before bedtime. What fulfilment is in this?
Seemingly, economics are all that matter nowadays. If people are not seen to be aiding the economy, they are deemed useless. It is time we took a good hard look at where we are heading and decided that people, and children in particular, should come first. - Yours, etc,
