Madam, - The letter of November 8th from Roger Cole of the Peace and Neutrality Alliance took me back to many debates which I had with the Little Englanders when I lived in that fair land.

There was the the Greater Britain Movement, The UK Independence Party and, believe it or not, the League of Empire Loyalists - all content to stand on the white cliffs of Dover and wave their union flags. So Mr Cole and his tribalistic flag-wavers are in good company.

That they include the word peace in their title is laughable. They are of the mind-set which gave us the two great slaughtering matches of the past century.

We now have all the warring nations bound together, on a basis of equality, in what I've no doubt is the greatest enterprise the human race has ever embarked on. Since the foundation of this State the Irish people have always favoured internationalism rather than tribalism, through the League of Nations, the United Nations and above all the European Union. So let's have a robust debate and I've no doubt the people will vote for a peaceful and prosperous future and that Europeans will continue to set an example which, hopefully, the other continents will follow. - Yours, etc,
