Madam, - The "No" campaign of Declan Ganley's Libertas group is increasingly hard to fathom.

The Libertas campaign website, which tells us the group will never lie, declares that "the Referendum Bill makes the Irish Constitution completely subject to EU" and that the Lisbon Treaty confers "absolute supremacy" to the EU over Ireland. It proceeds to unveil the offending article from the Bill to prove its point.

What it quotes is the updated version of the constitutional amendment made in 1972 to provide legal status in Ireland for EEC/EU regulations and directives.

Precisely the same wording, adjusted to take account of the title of each successive treaty, has been in the Constitution, as Article 29.10 for 36 years, but is now highlighted by Libertas as something new and threatening.

This country has managed to move forward and prosper for nearly 40 years under the terms of the article of our Constitution and without the helpful intervention of Libertas. I somehow feel we will survive both the latest version of Article 29.10 and all efforts to campaign on the basis of misinformation.

Perhaps someone will donate a copy of Bunreacht na hÉireann to the Libertas library.
