Madam, - In your obituary of Deborah Kerr (The Irish Times,October 20th), the star's role as Sr Clodagh in Black Narcissus is described as that of "an insecure nun in charge of a Catholic missionary school" (in the Himalayas).
For the record, the remote mountain mission in this memorable Powell and Pressburger adaptation of Rumer Godden's compelling novel is actually run by an Anglican religious order, not a Catholic one.
The plot centres on the emotional turmoil occasioned in the community by the arrival on the scene of English agent Mr Dean (David Farrar) and the fierce jealousy of Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron). Distinguished co-stars of Kerr in the 1947 Oscar-winning film included Jean Simmons, Sabu and Dame Flora Robson. Yours, etc,
BRENDA O'HANRAHAN, Park Lane, Sandymount, Dublin 4.
