Madam, - With reference to your recent excellent feature on Irish ports, it may interest your readers to know that only two Irish ports handle any form of rail-borne freight traffic.

Dublin handles ore, which is transported by rail from Tara Mines, Navan, and Waterford handles container traffic from Norfolkline, some of which is transported by rail thrice weekly to and from Ballina.

No other Irish port, including Rosslare Europort, owned and managed by Irish Rail, handles any rail-borne freight traffic whatever.

This highlights the fact that when transport emissions are at an all-time high and the issue of climate change is such a priority, not one kilo of originating freight traffic is transported out of Dublin by rail. - Yours, etc,
