Sir, - Frank Farrell's discourse on denim (October 7th) prompted by next Friday's Denim Day gave us a detailed view of one man's attitude to denim - but it doesn't explain the significance of Denim Day for your readers.
Since its inception last year, Denim Day has created greater public awareness of the extent of child poverty and deprivation in our much vaunted "Celtic Tiger" economy. Organised by the Irish Youth Foundation, Denim Day raised over £100,000 in 1996 to help tackle social issues which affect those many young people at the edge of our society. Mr Farrell may not have any denim in his wardrobe to wear on Denim Day, but I hope he will associate himself with the tens of thousands at work or at school who will - by contributing towards giving those young people the dignity and opportunity they deserve. - Yours, etc., From Brian Hanratty
Chairman, Denim Day Committee, Irish Youth Foundation, Ballyfermot, Dublin 10.
