Madam, – Those of us who believe in the value of immigration and the importance of international law are at a loss as to what to do in the face of the most recent waves of Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) deportations. On December 16th, at 2am, a talented writer and her three children were deported.
They lived here as a family for nearly six years. The youngest child knows Ireland as his first and only home. I have had the privilege of knowing the woman for several years. Her dedication, humour and sharp writer’s mind inspire me.
Her essays and poems speak to the need for change in her country of origin – an end to government corruption and economic injustice; powerful, brave ideas that Irish readers must surely understand, now more than ever.
She firmly believed that if Irish people knew more fully the plight and circumstances of asylum-seekers and refugees, things would change; a humane and just policy would be established to support individuals and families who seek a new beginning free from harm. In Ireland she acted as a model citizen – volunteering with local organisations, supporting neighbours and friends, believing in her ability to make a difference in the world. At this pivotal time in Irish history, we need more people like her. – Yours, etc,
