Sir, - Terence O'Connell's suggestion about giving current licence holder's a second plate (June 11th) has some merit when compared to the plans in the Faber Report.

But two wrongs do not make a right. The Government has been protecting the taxi-drivers monopoly for far too long. The Government does not protect your job in the same way. Why do the taxi-drivers think they are more important than everyone else and, hence, deserving of government intervention in the form of limiting competition? Taxi plates should be issued to everyone who wants them. Do we not have unemployed people in this country?

Do unemployed people not feel a slight bit annoyed with our Government? On one hand they say that they're doing everything they can to fight unemployment, and on the other they tell you you're not allowed to become a taxi-driver and offer an essential and valuable service to the citizens of Dublin? - Yours, etc., Emmet Stokes,
